Symbolism of the Trefoil Image

Abiding Savior's architecture features a prominent use of the triangle shape, especially in the altar area. This design was incorporated into the building to remind worshippers of the Christian teaching that God comes to humans in three ways - as God the Creator (Father), God the Redeemer (Son) and God the Sanctifier (Holy Spirit), This belief in the TRINITY is a fundamental Christian teaching, and is also at the center of the Lutheran point of view. An equilateral triangle is one way of graphically depicting this teaching. The triangle is found architecturally in several ways in the church's altar area. In fact, the entire altar platform is a triangular shape.

The intertwined circles in the design on this page (which are by themselves another symbol of the TRINITY) form yet another symbolic depiction of the TRINITY.

This symbol is called a trefoil:

The trefoil forms a triangle in the center of the symbol, but also represents the TRINITY by means of the three leaves.
