Ordination of Pastor Carol SinykinOn Sunday, July 22nd, the people who attended worship witnessed the ordination of Carol Sinykin into the Christian ministry. In our Lutheran tradition, ordination is one of several mileposts a person passes along the journey to full-time ministry. The journey often begins when a person senses an “inner” call from the Holy Spirit to follow this pathway. Lutherans believe that this call is strengthened by appropriate education - most often a bachelor’s degree followed by four years of seminary training. Candidates who successfully complete the educational component are certified by the church to be women and men whose character and style of life are also suitable for public ministry. A visible “call” from a congregation is most often the next step, followed by ordination and then a public installation into the ministry. It is a lengthy, arduous process, and this fall the journey begins for another from our midst, Salim Kaderbhai. Lutherans believe and teach that all work is godly, and no work stands above other work. Luther gave a name to this notion... “the priesthood of all believers” is what he labeled this idea, and we follow this understanding to this day. Yet, we set certain people aside for ministry because we have come to understand this as an orderly approach. We ask our pastors to preach the Word of God and administer the sacraments. Other tasks are certainly important, but these two are the main tasks. This is the responsibility Carol assumed at her ordination, and this is the responsibility each of your pastors tries to fulfill in your midst. Please keep Carol, Salim and each of us, in your prayers. |
