Abiding Savior Church: Our History

Abiding Savior Lutheran Church is located in a residential neighborhood in Mounds View, Minnesota, a northern suburb of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. Founded in 1939 as a congregation of the Lutheran Free Church, Abiding Savior is now affiliated with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and the WordAlone Network.

The following is reprinted from the
Dedication Service booklet. That service
was held on April 21, 1974.

As Jesus of Nazareth taught little children of the Heavenly Father's love out in the fields and on hillsides, so a few people taught little children of the Heavenly Father's love out under the trees in the yard of the C. E. Gordon Larsons in the spring of 1938. Sunday School work and the first church services were held in a community room of the Larson home.

Spring Lake Park Lutheran Church became an organized congregation in 1939 with Kristopher Hagen as the first pastor. In 1940 the cornerstone for the building was laid. The Sunday School membership grew from twenty-five children to one hundred and a church membership of one hundred fifty by 1940. The numbers grew, so in 1953 the church was enlarged, and especially for the many youth our Christian Education Building was built and dedicated in 1955. On October 7, 1962 it was voted that Spring Lake Park Lutheran Free Church merge with the American Lutheran Church .

More land was needed so a new site was purchased at Arden and Red Oak Drive in the fall of 1968. On August 29, 1971 it was voted to change the name of our church to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church . The church property at 7901 Red Oak Drive was sold in the fall of 1972.

The church building on Red Oak Drive was dedicated on April 21, 1974.
